831,459. Phonographic apparatus. RANK ORGANISATION Ltd. Nov. 3, 1958 [Oct. 10, 1957], No. 31669/57. Class 40 (2). A random selector for the items available in a " background music " phonograph uses an elongated optical or magnetic record such as shown, where the group of tracks 2 represent a set of coterminous recordings and 4 a similar set. Pulses 5 in an additional track (or recorded as supersonic signals in a programme track) operate a random number generating device of mechanical or electronic form to control the record feeding and guiding arrangements so as to select the next following record at random. Two such records may supply performances alternatively, while the non-playing record is rewound &c. The feeding, guiding and transducer arrangements are described.
