In a method of profiling metal bodies such as gears in which profiling rollers 6, Fig. 5, are moved in a planetary path 2, 3 on a rotor 1, Fig. 7, into engagement with the slowly revolving work the rollers 6 are adjustable angularly in the rotor 1 about an axis at right-angles to the rotor axis B so that when the rotor 1 is set at an angle α to compensate for the rotary movement of the work, the rollers 6 can be adjusted into alignment with the grooves. In one example the rollers 6 are mounted on conical holders 4 which are axially adjustable on the rotor 1 and clamped in position by bolts 2 engaging profile workers 3. The holders can be released by conical screws 5. In another example cylindrical holders 4, Fig. 9, are clamped against a thrust-ring 8 by screws 2 and spring washers 7. Positive location may be provided by pins on the thrust ring 8 engaging in the rotor 1 and holders 4. In another example the shafts 10, Fig. 10, for the rollers 6 are journalled at both ends in ball-joints 11, 12, which are clamped directly in the rotor 1 by rings 14, 14a attached by bolts (not shown) and adjustably rotatable on the rotor 1 to set the rollers 6 at the required skew angle. In another example rollers 6, Fig. 12, with spherical ends 17 are mounted on conical holders 4 and are rotatably driven by rolling against fixed friction rings 16 as therotor 1 rotates.
