Abstract
794,322. Glass films and flakes. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Aug. 24, 1956 [Aug. 29, 1955], No. 25991/56. Class 56. Glass film, which may be flaked, is made by passing molten glass through an annular orifice 18 in the bottom of a melter 11 and slightly ballooning the cylinder thus formed by an air inlet 24. The cylinder is then flattened by passing it between attenuating rollers 19 having an undercut surface to prevent complete collapse of the cylinder and to allow the passage of sufficient air to re-expand the flattened cylinder somewhat. This then passes between perforated rollers 21 set closer together than the rollers 19. The rollers are provided with boxes 27, Fig. 1, 68, Fig. 5. The boxes 27 are compartmented, the upper compartments communicating with suction at 31, and the lower with pressure at 32. The suction splits the edges of the flattened cylinder to form two separate films which then are foliated by the pressure from the lower compartments of the boxes. The boxes 68 are connected to suction only and are used when the films are to be collected as such without foliation. Powdered materials for covering the flakes may be introduced in the air supplied through the inlet 24 or in the pressure air to the lower compartments of the boxes 27. The flake or film may be used to reinforce resins, rubber, cement, mastic, gypsum, paper or glass.
