Abstract

793,362. Carburetters. BURGESS. P. Nov. 7. 1955 [Nov 8. 1954; March 25 1955] Nos 32303/54 and 8667/55. Class 7(3) A control mechanism for a throttle valve of an induction system for an internal combustion engine comprises an operator actuated member arranged for connection to the valve through a resiliently yielding connection and means responsive to changes in load on the engine adapted so to actuate the throttle valve that with increase of load the responsive means applies a closing force direct to the valve or to a part moving therewith overriding any force which can be applied by the operator actuated member through the yielding connection in the opposite sense but with decrease in load the responsive means permits the operator actuated member to open the valve at a rate dependent on the rate of decrease of load. As shown a suction controlled diaphragm 6 operates a stop 12 which co-operates with an arm 18 on the throttle valve spindle 30. The throttle valve is operated by an operator controlled member 27 which is freely mounted on the spindle 30 but connected to this spindle by a spiral spring 26. A dust cover 28 is fixed to the spindle 30 and a pin 31 co-operates with a slot 32 in the cover. The pin striking one end of the slot provides throttle valve closing means when the lever is moved in an anti-clockwise direction. Member 33 co-operates with a lug 34 to form a full throttle stop. The maximum position of opening of the throttle may be limited by limiting movement of the stop 12. The stop 12 can be moved away from the arm 18 by a control cable 24. In an alternative arrangement the means responsive to suction in the induction system may comprise the throttle valve itself which may be of the butterfly type and so mounted as to rock about an axis to one side of the centre of pressure of the valve so that decrease in suction on the engine side of the valve applies a force to it tending to close it whereas increase in suction tends to open it. In another alternate arrangement the means responsive to changes in load on the engine, may comprise a solenoid energized by the electric generator driven by the engine the output of which generator varies with the speed of the engine. In a further alternative arrangement the means responsive to the load on the engine may comprise means responsive to changes in pressure in the engine lubricating system.
