Abstract
793,300. Fuel atomizers. DE HAVILLAND ENGINE CO., Ltd. May 19, 1954 [June 19, 1953], No. 17123/53. Class 75(1) [Also in Groups XII and XXVI] In a rocket motor which works by the combustion of two or more propellants in a combustion chamber, at least one of the propellants being a liquid, the combustion chamber contains a disc arranged to rotate at high speed and to which a liquid propellant is supplied so that it is flung in a finely atomized condition from the periphery of the disc. In the figures the inner casing 10 of the combustion chamber is supported within an outer casing 11 ana hydrogen peroxide from an inlet 15 passes between the outer and inner casings, thus cooling the combustion chamber, to chamber 22 and a catalyst 23 which decomposes it. The decomposition products pass through stationary guide vanes 24 and drive the blades 26 of a turbine rotor 27 attached to a hollow shaft 28 which provides a drive for pumps for pumping the propellants and for any auxiliaries of the rocket motor. Fuel such as kerosene is supplied through the hollow shaft 28 to an atomizer disc 30 via radial passages 31 on either side of the disc communicating with the interior of the shaft. Fuel is also supplied through passages 34 to the space between the turbine rotor 27 and a shield plate 32. The rotating disc 30, the shield plate 32 and the flow of fuel between the shield plate and the turbine rotor have the effect of protecting the turbine rotor from the fierce heat of combustion and of cooling it.
