Abstract

1463344 Gas turbines-cooling WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 17 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 31569/74 Headings F1G and FIT The invention relates to gas turbines and to means for supplying cooling fluid such as air to stator shroud rings which are located radially outwardly of rows of rotor blades. The gas turbine engine shown comprises a rotor assembly comprising discs 12, 14, 16 having rows of rotor blades, 18, 20, 22 mounted at the peripheries thereof. The turbine stator structure comprises an outer casing 38 and an inner casing 36 supported therein, the inner casing defining a chamber 42 to which cooling air is supplied through inlet 40. The inner casing 36 carries three rows of stator blades 24, 26, 28 which are mounted in the casing by means of outer shroud members 35. The stator blades carry inner shroud members 32 at their inner ends, the shroud members 32 co-operating with platform members 34 of the rotor blades 18, 20 22. Shroud members in the form of segments 37 are supported by the outer shroud members 35 so as to surround the tips of the rotor blades 18, 20, the segments 37 having flanges 37A which engage flanges 35A formed on the shroud members 35. The segments 37 are spring-loaded inwardly against the flanges 35A by means of members 44 which comprise a tube member 56 secured to the outer casing 36 and containing an inner tube member 52 which is urged resiliently inward to engage the segment 37 by means of a spring 54. Cooling air from the chamber 42 enters the tube member 44 through inlet 57 and discharges therefrom through openings 51 in the tube member 52, the cooling air serving to cool the segments 37. A heat shield 46 is disposed adjacent the outer surfaces of the segments 37, the heat shield comprising an inner corrugated member: The cooling air escapes into the working fluid annulus through openings in the flanges 35A. Cooling air also passes from the chamber 42 through openings 59, 59' on to the shroud members 35 of the stator blades 24, 26, 28.
