Class 83 (4) Apparatus for making wire netting and comprising netting beams carrying twisting tools and racks, guided in the beams, to rotate the tools, in a first working phase, the beams being moved longitudinally together with their associated racks to shift the wires transversely of the direction of travel of the finished web, and in the second working phase the racks only being moved to rotate the twisting tools, is characterized in that means for driving the racks, which includes a crank, stops or nearly stops them at the end of the first working phase and beginning of the second. Four netting beams 5, longitudinally slidable in a frame 4, carry half-sections of twisting bobbins 8, the halfsections carried by the left-hand beams, Fig. 5, carrying bobbins 11 containing wire 10, wire from a reel 9 passing through the half-sections on the right-hand beams. The formed netting is drawn over a feeder roll 13 and wound on to a take-up roll 15. In operation, in a first phase, the beams 5 are moved. longitudinally, the right-hand beams in the opposite direction from the left-hand beams, so that the halfsections are moved to face new half-sections. Racks 6, guided in the right-hand beams 5 and which in the first phase have moved with the beams, are then halted or nearly halted, and then, in a second phase, moved longitudinally of the beams to rotate the bobbins 8 and twist adjacent wires together. The beams and rack are then again moved together to reposition the bobbin half sections prior to twisting again. The beams 5 are moved longitudinally by a cam 23 and link means 38, 39, Fig. 6. The racks 6 are connected to a slide 33, 36 which is reciprocated by a crank-pin 30 on a gear 21 engaging a cam groove 32 in the slide 33. The slide 33 is stationary at the dead centres of the crank-pin, corresponding to the end of a second phase and beginning of a first, and the cam groove 32 is so shaped at 32<SP>1</SP> that the pin in its circular path does not move the slide at these points, between the dead centres, corresponding to the end of a first and beginning of a second phase.
