Abstract

792,906. Controlling gas burners. SPERRYN & CO., Ltd. May 4, 1956 May 7, 1955], No. 13276/55. Class 75(1) A thermo-magnetic safety valve for a gas burner and of the kind incorporating a main valve 8, Fig. 1, controlling the supply of gas/from inlet 2 to the burner (not shown) connected to outlet 3 and an aligned and associated valve 14 controlling the supply of gas to a pilot jet 24, Fig. 2, both valves being normally held open during operation of the burner by an electromagnet 31, 32, energized bv a thermocouple 34, Fig. 2, exposed to the pilot jet flame, is adapted for use in an installation including a plurality of burners spaced apart with a separate control valve for each burner, by providing the body part 18 of the valve carrying gas for the pilot jet with two opposed connections 21 leading to and from a passage 20, Fig. 1, for the pilot jet supply and a connection 22 for an outlet pipe 23 leading to the pilot jet 24 disposed at right angles to the line of the connections 21. By this means, the separate valves for the burners can be mounted in line with aligned pipes 21 feeding the pilot jets in parallel. The pilot valve 14 is located below the main valve 8, the member 14 being carried on a stem 12 to which is secured a main valve auxiliary member 13 which closes the main gas supply between inlet 2 and outlet 3 when the main valve member 8 is manually held open by means of a push button 25, there being a lost motion between the member 12 and the member 11 carrying the main valve 8 and armature 28 of the magnet 31, 32 enclosed in a housing 30, when this magnet holds the armature 28 and the button 25 is released, the valve 8 is held off its seat 6 but the valve member 13 drops from its seat 7 and. the main valve is thus open, and at the same time, the pilot valve 14 is open since the lost motion between members 11 and 12 is insufficient to allow the valve 14 to sit on its seating 19. The valve 14 is formed as part of a diaphragm 15 held between the pilot valve body 18 and the main valve body 1.
