Abstract
A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst is prepared by forming an intermediate concentrate containing 1-35 per cent by weight of an active hydrogenation - dehydrogenation component, other than a nobile metal, supported on a solid adsorptive carrier, and then mixing the intermediate concentrate with at least its own weight of pre-dried diluent adsorptive material. The diluent may be alumina with or without a minor amount of silica, chromia, magnesia, titania, zirconia, thoria, boria, zinc oxide, phosphoric anhydride, or halogen acid. The carrier may have the same composition as the diluent or may be alumina associated with potassium oxide, calcium oxide, potassium carbonate, or sodium carbonate; alternatively the carrier may be composed entirely of one or more of zirconia, titania, magnesia, silica, thoria, and activated carbon. Specified active catalyst components are molybdena, cobalt molybdate, chromia, vanadia, tungsten oxide, and nickel. In an example, calcined alumina is dry-mixed with molybdena, calcined, dry-mixed with a further amount of alumina and then used in the hydroforming of naphtha. The catalyst is suitable for fixed-bed or fluidized-bed use.
