Abstract
792,659. Wire strainers. ECROFNIER & PARTNERS, Ltd. Oct. 28, 1954 [Nov. 17, 1953], No. 31824/53. Class 45. [Also in Group X] In a wire strainer especially for straining the wires of pre-stressed concrete, and comprising a barrel 10 having a stop 14 at its forward end, a cylinder 11 reciprocated within the barrel by a spur wheel 26 and having a bore 12 for the wire, and a one-way gripper A mounted at the forward end of the cylinder, a projection 23 on the gripper engages the stop when the barrel is moved rearwardly of the cylinder to cause release of the gripper. One end of the wire 13 is held in a stop C, Fig. 3, and the remainder of the wire is passed through the concrete mould to a fixed one-way gripper B, from whence it is threaded into the strainer through the stop 14, through the gripper A and through the bore 12. The spur wheel engages a rack 25 on the cylinder and is driven through a ratchet and pawl (not shown) by rocking a torque wrench 31 which slips or registers when a predetermined tension has been applied to the wire. During rearward movements of the cylinder the gripper A tensions the wire, whilst during forward movements of the cylinder the wire is released from the gripper A, the gripper B acting to maintain the tension of the wire passing through the mould. After the predetermined tension has been applied to the wire the gripper A is released by pulling the barrel away from the abutment 30 to bring the stop 14 into contact with the projection 23. The release of the wire may be facilitated by moving the cylinder forward by means of a bar 35, Fig. 3. An indicator showing the amount the wire has stretched may be provided on the barrel. The gripper A may be replaced by grippers of different sizes. Fig. 9 shows an adaptor fitted to the forward end of the strainer, and which permits the one-way gripper B to be replaced by a standard wedge grip acting as a one-way gripper. The forward end of the adaptor engages the wedge grip D the wedges of which are engaged by a spring pressed plunger 45 sliding the body 40 of the adaptor. Specification 792,658 is referred to.
