Abstract
792,508. Suction boxes. BERTRAMS, Ltd., and DUNCAN, G. F. April 9, 1956 [June 17, 1955], No. 17476/55. Class 96. A suction box for a paper-making machine is divided at one or both ends into upper and lower compartments by a horizontal partition and the effective width of the box is varied by an adjustable deckle in the upper compartment having a gutter adapted continuously to fill with water. In the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 3 a deckle located in a compartment 17 consists of a chamfered plate 23 capable of limited movement on a sleeve 22 and a chamfered plate 24 captive on the sleeve; a resilient packing 28 is disposed in a V-shaped slot formed between the plates. In use, the teeth 30 of a key 20 are engaged with slots 31 on the sleeve 22 and the key is rotated until the plate 23 is unscrewed sufficiently to enable the deckle to be moved to the desired position; the key is then rotated in the opposite direction until contraction between the plates 23, 24 causes the packing 28 to expand into contact with the top and walls of the box. The seal is maintained by water collecting in the gutter 27. A deckle of modified construction is described for use with longitudinally slotted boxes.
