Abstract

792,390. Waterproofing paper. SOC. DES USINES CHIMIQUES RHONE-POULENC. Feb. 13, 1956 [April 13, 1955], No. 4502/56. Class 140. A method of treating wallpaper to impart thereto a resistance to water and to marking comprises treating the paper with an aqueous solution of aluminium triformate and then with an aqueous emulsion containing an ionic emulsifying agent and an organo-silicic oil or resin of the true polysiloxane or polysiloxane-polysilane type with either alkyl or aryl groups or both in which the ratio of organic groups to silicon atoms is from 1 to 2.5. Specified alkyl groups are methyl and ethyl. Specified aryl groups are phenyl, naphthyl, methylphenyl and ethylphenyl. The paper may be dried after treatment with the aluminium triformate and before treatment with the aqueous emulsion. The organopolysiloxanes may be oils, resins or gums employed separately or in association. The term includes both the organopolysiloxanes proper and the organosilicic compounds containing at the same time -Si-O-Sibonds and -Si-Sibonds. Specified ionic emulsifying agents are stearates or oleates of an organic base, e.g. the oleate or stearate of morphaline or triethanolamine. Prior to forming the emulsion the polysiloxane may be diluted with an organic solvent such as petroleum spirit, white spirit, aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorinated solvents. Butanol or triethanolamine titanate may be added to the emulsion when ready for use. The solution of aluminium triformato and the polysiloxane emulsion may be applied to the decorative surface of the paper with a roller or spray gun or the paper may be impregnated by dipping in two successive treatment liquids. The aluminium triformate may be incorporated in the priming and printing baths during the manufacture of the wallpaper. Examples disclose the treatment of wallpaper with solutions of aluminium triformate and aqueous emulsions of methylpolysiloxane oil, methylpolysiloxane resin and methylsilicic resin emulsified with morpholine oleate, morpholine stearate and a mixture of oleic acid and morpholine.
