Abstract

In the manufacture of composite articles having parts composed of different materials including a part made of an elastomer compound of the kind which can be shaped when in a soft plastic condition and on subsequent heating increases in tensile strength and elasticity, and a part made of a material which would be softened, deteriorated or destroyed by the heat treatment necessary to bring about the desired change of properties in the elastomer, an equivalent change in properties of the elastomer to that which would normally be obtained by heating is obtained by subjecting the article to high energy irradiation, particularly high-speed electrons. The elastomer may be natural rubber, polychloroprene, a butadiene-styrene copolymer, or a polysiloxane or polysulphide rubber, and the other material may be polyethylene. The composite article may be an electric cable. The composite article may be an electric cable. Specifications 766,802 [Group III] and 782,442 are referred to.
