Abstract

In the vulcanizing of rubber articles, particularly the rubber covering of electric wires and cables, the rubber body is enclosed in a composite covering consisting of alternate layers of vulcanized and unvulcanized rubber compound, the inner layer being unvulcanized, and subjecting the whole to heat treatment. If it is desired to remove any of the layers after vulcanization, the outer layer to remain is treated, as by covering with french chalk, to prevent it from becoming vulcanized to the overlying layer. The layers are preferably applied by helically wrapping strips of material round the body. The body may include a material for generating gas during heating to produce a cellular body, the covering layers extending during the action and then uniting with the body to form an unbroken skin.
