792,082. Grinding toothed combs. LISTER & CO., Ltd., R. A. Jan. 13, 1956 [Feb. 22, 1955], No. 5283/55. Class 60. The teeth of a comb for a hand-piece of a machine for shearing hair, wool or other filamentous formations, e.g. a sheep shearing machine or a horse clipping machine, are formed by grinding ; a ribbed grinding wheel associated with a crushing roller is used to grind simultaneously a series of equally-spaced non- adjacent gullets to form the adjacent one sides of the teeth which flank them, and a second grinding wheel associated with a second crushing roller is used to grind simultaneously a second series of equally spaced non-adjacent gullets having the same spacing as the first series, and so on with further grinding wheels as necessary until both sides of all of the teeth have been ground. As applied to a sheep-shear comb having ten wedge-shaped teeth, the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th gullets are operated on by a ribbed grinding wheel formed by the crushing roller of Fig. 1 thus forming teeth sides 12, Fig. 2. The 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th gullets are then operated on by a second ribbed grinding wheel formed by the crushing roller of Fig. 3, thus forming teeth sides 16, Fig. 4. To produce wedge-shaped teeth, the comb is held at an angle, e.g., 33 degrees, to the line of traverse 14 of the grinding wheel, Fig. 5. The two grinding operations may be carried out in the same or in separate machines : in the latter event, transfer jigging is used. A slave and master crushing roller may be provided at opposite ends of the bed of each machine ; the master roller is used to form a grinding surface on the grinding wheel when it has worn beyond acceptable limits. Before further grinding of combs the slave crushing roller is ground to correct form by means of the newly dressed wheel and becomes the new master.
