Abstract

791,428. Change speed gearing; ratchet clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Sept. 17, 1956, No. 28365/56. Class 80 (2). A change speed gear in which one of a pair of relatively rotatable gear elements is held stationary to provide a ratio drive comprises a jamming roller clutch to provide a direct drive from one shaft to the other, and a helical spring one-way clutch connected between the rotatable gear elements to provide a direct drive in the opposite direction, the helical spring clutch being disengageable. In an overdrive unit, the driving shaft 10 is in splined connection with a planet carrier 27 of an epicyclic gear 23, the annulus 24 being rigid with the outer member 18 of a one-way jamming roller clutch 14 the inner member 15 of which is splined to the shaft 10. The outer member 18 is integral with the output shaft 11. The roller cage 20 of the clutch 14 is biased by a spring 22 towards the engaging position. The sun gear 25 of the epicyclic gear 23 is freely rotatable on the shaft 10 and is rigidly connected with a brake drum 31 of a brake 30. An annular plate 38 splined to the sun gear 25 has a notch 37 engaged by one end tang 36a of a helical spring 36 coacting with the bore 35 of an extension of the annulus 24 to form a one-way clutch, the other end tang being held at 39 in a drum 40 freely rotatable on the sun gear 25. The spring 36 is arranged to be normally in frictional contact with the surface 35 to provide a one-way drive in a direction opposed to the clutch 14. For normal direct drive the brake 30 is released and torque is transmitted from shaft 10 to shaft 11 through the clutch 14. Overrun torque from shaft 11 to shaft 10 causes engagement of the spring clutch 33 to transmit the drive, thus providing positive direct drive in both directions. Engagement of the brake 30 holds the reaction run 25 stationary and, through drum 40, releases the clutch 33, torque is then transmitted at overdrive ratio in both directions through the epicyclic gear 23. In one modification, the planet carrier is held by the helical spring clutch; and in a further modification the arrangement of Fig. 1 is reversed to provide an underdrive.
