Abstract
791,384. Radiation measuring arrangements. SIEMENS-REINIGER-WERKE AKT.-GES. Nov. 8, 1955 [Nov. 8, 1954], No. 31949/55. Class 40 (3). An instrument for determining the intensity of radio-active radiation received from an area comprises a radiation absorbing tubular element 1 inside which is slidably mounted a measuring instrument such as a scintillation counter 3. The ray entrance window 4 of the instrument is disposed inside the tube 1 so that the solid angle from which radiation passing into the mouth of the tube 5 comes from to affect the measuring instrument is adjustable by axial movement of the instrument itself inside the tube. Mounted on the instrument casing by. means of clamp 6 is a calibrated tube 11 extending through a support 13 on the casing 2 of the element 1. The calibrations 26 on this tube give an indication of the solid angle from which radiation is being received. Sliding inside the tube 11 is a further calibrated member 10 having attached to its extreme end a foot 9. When the foot is placed against the area under test the scale 25 indicates the distance from it to the measuring instrument. Clamp screws 12 and 15 are provided so that the parts 10 and 11 can be secured in any desired position. The foot 9 is made of material capable of transmitting the radiation and may have circular marks on its face to indicate the extent of the area being viewed by the instrument. The mouth of the tube is preferably protected by a cap capable of transmitting the radiation received. It may also support detachable filters or diaphragms. A support clamp 17 substantially at the centre of gravity of the instrument may be used to support it in an angularly adjustable manner on a special stand (Fig. 5, not shown), allowing translational movement in one or more directions. The instrument may be calibrated by the insertion into the end 5 of a crystal mounted container filled with a standard radiating liquid. Preferably the container is of metal with a glass liner.
