Abstract
872,464. X-ray gauges. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. June 12, 1958 [Aug. 14, 1957], No. 18861/58. Class 40(3) The thickness of a coating on a specimen is measured in terms of the fluorescence radiation from the specimen when irradiated with X-rays, the latter passing through a diaphragm having an opening so shaped that the product of the area of irradiated coating viewed by the measuring means and the average intensity of the X-rays over this area does not vary if the specimen moves towards or away from the source of X-rays. Rays from the tube 2 (Fig. 1) pass through a diaphragm 10 on to the specimen 5 (e.g. tincoated steel strip) and the resulting fluorescent radiation is detected by a Geiger or scintillation counter 12. The diaphragm aperture (Fig. 2) has one side 40 V-shaped, and the opposite side straight (as shown) or V-shaped also. Fluorescent radiation from the sides of the diaphragm passes through an adjustable aperture 32 (Fig. 1) to a similar counter 26. The output of each counter is fed to a separate amplifier, pulse height discriminator, from binary scalers in series, a decade scaler and a rate meter, and finally the ratio between the two rates is determined in the unit 60, this giving a measure of the thickness of the tin coating on the strip 5. Errors due to variation of the power input to the X-ray tube are thus eliminated by using the comparison counter 26. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) each unit 12, 26 feeds a counter, the two being connected so that they both stop when one has reached a certain count. Adjustment for variation of output of the X-ray tube is carried out by a micrometer 22 (Figs. 1 and 2) which attenuates by a known amount the radiation reaching the detector 12.
