Abstract

The invention comprises dialkyl tin salts of mono- or di-basic, saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acids of from 3 to 20 carbon atoms, and the alkyl groups and/or the carboxylic acid residues containing at least one epoxide group. Suitable carboxylic acids specified include propionic, butyric, valeric, caproic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, malic, maleic, malonic, glutaric, adipic, glycidic, acrylic, vinylacetic, a -methacrylic, crotonic, oleic, ricinoleic, b -vinylacrylic, b -styrylacrylic, sorbic, and geranic acids, linseed oil acids and epoxy-acids derived from unsaturated acids. The salts are prepared by reacting a dialkyl tin oxide RR1SnO where R and R1 are alkyl groups, preferably containing not more than 12 carbon atoms with the selected carboxylic acid or acids, at least either the salt or the acid containing an epoxy group. Alternatively the alkyl tin oxide may be reacted with an unsaturated carboxylic acid and the ethylenic linkage in the salt epoxidized by means of peracetic acid. The so-formed alkyl tin salts may be used as stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride and other chlorine-containing resins, and rubber hydrochloride (see Groups IV (a) and V). In an an example dibutyl tin oxide is reacted with 9 : 10-epoxystearic acid to give di-butyl tin di(9 : 10-epoxystearate). The preparation of the same compound by peracetic acid epoxidation of dibutyl tin dioleate is also described. 9 : 10-Epoxystearic acid may be prepared by reacting oleic acid with peracetic acid in the presence of anhydrous sodium acetate.ALSO:Polyvinyl chloride compositions plasticized with di-(2-ethylhexylphthalate) and ethylpalmitate are stabilized by addition of a dialkyltin salt of a mono- or dibasic, saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acid of from 3 to 20 carbon atoms, the alkyl groups and/or the carboxylic acid residues containing at least one epoxide group. Dibutyltin-di(9 : 10-epoxystearate) is specified.ALSO:Rubber hydrochloride compositions are stabilized by addition of a dialkyltin salt of a mono- or di-basic, saturated or unsaturated carboxylic acid of from 3 to 20 carbon atoms, the alkyl groups and/or the carboxylic acid residues containing at least one epoxide group. Dibutyl tin di-(9 : 10-epoxystearate) is specified.
