Abstract
Halogenated vinyl resins with or without plasticisers may be stabilized against deterioration by heat by addition of thiomalates of dialkyl and trialkyl tins of formul <FORM:0773434/IV(a)/1> where R is any alkyl radical, which radicals in the same molecule may be the same or different. In Example 4 a composition comprising polyvinyl chloride, a high melting point octadecenamide and dibutyl tin thiomalate is described.ALSO:The invention comprises the thiomalates of dialkyl and trialkyl tin compounds in which the tin atom is bonded to a carboxylic acid group. They may be prepared by reacting a dialkyl- or trialkyl tin halide (especially chloride) with neutral alkali metal salts of thiomalic acid, or by reacting the alkyl tin hydroxide with thiomalic acid. The products are of formul <FORM:0773434/IV(b)/1> where R is any alkyl radical which radicals in the same molecule may be the same or different. The products may be used as heat stabilizers in halogenated vinyl resins, both plasticised and unplasticised (see Group IV (a)). In an example, di-hydroxy dibutyl tin is reacted with thiomalic acid. If desired, the reacting materials may be added to the resin mix and caused to react in the pressing operation.
