Abstract

Vinyl chloride polymers are stabilized by both a conventional heat stabilizer and an auxiliary heat stabilizer consisting of a phenol of the formula:- <FORM:0718245/IV (a)/1> where R is an alkyl group. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, ethyl or butyl acrylate, dibutyl maleate, diethyl fumarate, vinylidene chloride or acrylonitrile. Conventional stabilizers mentioned are dibutyl tin dilaurate, dibutyl tin maleate, litharge, lead salicylate, maleate, phosphite, silicate, or phthalate, sodium carbonate, trimagnesium phosphate, calcium stearate, glycidyl oleate, glycidyl sorbate dimer and the diglycidyl ethers of diphenols. Specified auxiliary heat stabilizers are 2, 6-di-t-butyl-4-methylphenol; 2, 4,6-tri-t-butylphenol, and 2, 21-methylene bis (4, 6- di-t-butyl phenol). The stabilized polymer compositions may also contain plasticizers such as di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-(butoxyethyl) phthalate, glycidyl oleate, epoxidized soya bean oil, tri-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, or diphenyl mono-octyl phosphate and other ingredients such as stearic acid and titanium dioxide.
