Abstract

Compositions comprising a vinyl halide resin and an inorganic filler are stabilized with (a) a nitrogen compound containing the group <FORM:1077108/C3/1> and (b) 0.1 to 3 parts by weight per part of (a) of a polycarboxylic acid anhydride. The resin may be polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl bromide, or a copolymer of a vinyl halide with vinylidene chloride, styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, methyl methacrylate or dialkyl maleates or fumarates. Specified inorganic fillers are asbestos, mineral wools, kaolin, silica, fuller's earth, magnesium silicate, calcium silicate, calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, barium carbonate, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide, lead chromate and iron oxide. Specified nitrogen compounds are melamine, methylmelamines, propylmelamines, phenylmelamines, melam, melem, benzoguanamine, guanidine, dicyandiamide, melaniline, and salts thereof, e.g. carbonates, hydrochlorides and sulphates. Specified anhydrides are succinic, glutaric, adipic, dodecenylsuccinic, citraconic, itaconic, maleic, chloromaleic, bromomaleic, tricarballylic, phthalic, chlorophthalic, tetrahydrophthalic, hexahydrophthalic, 3,4-dimethyl-6-butenyl tetrahydrophthalic, hexachloro endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic, trimellitic and pyromellitic anhydrides, and adducts of maleic anhydride with cyclopentadiene or methylcyclopentadiene. The compositions may also contain polyhydric alcohols, e.g. pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, methyl glucoxide and styrene/allyl alcohol copolymers; conventional stabilizers, e.g. barium, cadmium and zinc carboxylates and phenates, organic phosphites and epoxidized oils and fatty acid esters; and plasticizers, e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate and tricresyl phosphate. The compositions may be used in floor coverings. Examples describe compositions comprising vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, asbestos, calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide together with (1) dipropylene glycol dibenzoate, epoxidized soya bean oil, melamine and maleic or phthalic anhydride; (2) dipropylene glycol dibenzoate, epoxidized soya bean oil, phthalic anhydride and melamine or dicyandiamide; (3) butyl benzyl phthalate, diisooctyl phthalate, epoxidized soya bean oil and melamine with maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride, phthalic anhydride or maleic anhydride and pentaerythritol, or dicyandiamide with phthalic anhydride; and (4) magnesium silicate, coumarone-indene resin, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, dicyandiamide, phthalic anhydride and optionally sorbitol.
