791,045. Electric selective signalling systems. COLLINS RADIO CO. Dec. 28, 1955 [April 6, 1955], No. 37144/55. Class 40 (1). In a remote control system including a control unit and a controlled unit, the control unit comprising a control switch for selecting a predetermined position from a plurality of possible positions and transmitting corresponding signals by means of a coded combination of potentials to the controlled unit over a plurality of transmission wires, the signals are in the form of a combination of a binary and a ternary code, the number of possible selection positions being greater than 2<SP>n</SP> but less than 3<SP>n</SP>, where n is the number of transmission wires. The controlled unit comprises a means for converting the ternary code signals to binary code signals and for repeating the binary code signals from the control unit, and means for decoding the resultant binary code signals. The control unit, Fig. 1, comprises a ten-position controller 20 operating ganged switches 50, 70, 90, a source of negative potential 16 and positive potential 17 being connected via switch 5 to the switch contacts in the manner shown. The control unit is connected by lines 11, 12, 13, to the controlled unit, Fig. 2, terminal 14 being a common earth connection. With the control knob on position 1 and switch 5 closed, positive potential is applied to contact 51 of switch 50 and via line 13 to diodes 112, 114, and via diode 112 energizes relay 150, thereby connecting earth to the binary decoder 24. Line 13 may carry positive, negative, or zero potential, giving ternary code combinations. Similarly on position 2 positive potential is applied via terminal 92 of switch 90 and via line 11 to energize relay 120 and connect earth to the corresponding terminal of the binary decoder 24 to correspondingly align the controlled apparatus 25. Line 11 may carry positive or zero potential, giving binary code combinations. On position 8 a negative potential on line 12 operates relay 140, a positive potential on line 13 operates relay 150, and a positive potential on line 11 operates relay 120. On each of the remaining positions a unique combination of potentials on lines 11, 12, 13, is provided.
