In a remote control system comprising a control unit for selecting a position from a plurality of possible positions and transmitting corresponding code signals consisting of combinations of three different potentials, e.g. positive, negative, and zero, to a controlled unit over a plurality of transmission wires, the controlled unit includes a decoding means comprising a plurality of fixed contacts and a movable contact, the movable contact being driven until it is positioned opposite to a fixed contact in a predetermined manner corresponding to a particular selected position. The system provides 3n possible selection positions where n is the number of transmission wires. The control unit 2 is provided with a selector knob 7 controlling through a shaft 51 rotatable contact elements 8, 9 which co-operate with fixed contacts 8a, 8b, 8c and 9a, 9b, 9c, respectively, the fixed contacts being connected as shown to the transmission lines 54, 55, 56. A source of positive potential is connected to the movable contact 8 and a source of negative potential to the movable contact 9 and the selected combinations of potentials on the conductors 54, 55, 56 are applied via diodes 14 to 19, to appropriate relay windings 14a to 19a. The relay contacts 14b to 19b are so interconnected that at least one of the fixed contacts 20a to 20c, 21a to 21c, 22a to 22c, co-operating with rotatable switch elements 20, 21, 22, is at earth potential. In this way a circuit is completed to operate the relay 39 and thus energize the motor 30 which through the shaft 52 rotates the switch elements 20, 21, 22, until the circuit of the relay 39 is broken to stop the motor.
