Abstract
790,844. Energy - absorbing devices. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. May 8, 1956 [May 20, 1955], No. 14264/56. Class 103 (1). A shock-absorber which permanently deforms to absorb the kinetic energy of a body fixed thereto comprises a cylindrical body 1 having one end partially closed by a polygonal disc 2 having a central aperture 3 and welded to the cylinder at points 4; the cylinder being bent to conform generally with the peripheral shape of disc 2 so as to present substantially flat surfaces 5 and, at each of the welded corners 4 of the cylinder, shallow V-shaped recesses or depressions 6. When such a shock-absorber is employed as a crash-head for an airborne supplies cylinder, which is connected by convenient means to cylinder 1, and the supplies are to be dropped on to comparatively soft ground it may be necessary to provide the crash-head with a nose-plate to prevent it diving too deeply into the earth. Fig. 5 shows diagramatically the buckling which takes place of the cylinder shown in Fig. 4 and fitted with a nose-plate 7 on the application of a sudden large axial compressive force; such as experienced on striking a hard surface at top speed. The invention may be applied to arresting the motion of moving vehicles, e.g. as a means for mounting bumper bars on road vehicles. Specification 790,843 is referred to.
