Abstract

Organic halogen compounds are converted into their homologous aldehydes by reacting with a tertiary phosphine to form the quaternary phosphonium salt, converting the latter by treatment with a metallic compound which splits off hydrogen halide into the corresponding phosphonium ylides, allowing a formic ester to act on the latter and if necessary hydrolysing the reaction product. As starting compounds there may be used methyl, propyl, isopropyl, hexyl, dodecyl chloride, cyclohexyl chloride, benzyl and diphenyl methyl chloride and the corresponding bromides and iodes, methoxy-, chlor-or carbethoxy-benzyl bromide, allyl bromide, b -cyclogeranyl bromide, ionyl bromide, ethoxy-ethyl bromide, chloracetic acid esters, chloracetonitrile, 1,4-dichlorethane or propylene bromide; as tertiary phosphine there may be used triphenyl phosphine, tri-p-tolyl phosphine, trichlorophenylphosphine, diphenyl - p - tolyl phosphine or naphthyl diphenylphosphines. As metallic compounds which split off hydrogen halide there may be used methyl, butyl or phenyl lithium, methyl or phenyl magnesium bromide, calcium or sodium acetylide, sodium or potassium amides and alkali or alkaline earth metal alcoholates. As formic acid esters there may be used methyl, ethyl, benzyl or phenyl formate. Examples describe the preparation of 21,61,61 - trimethylcyclohexene - (11) - yl - (11)-acetaldehyde, phenyl acetaldehyde, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde isobutyraldehyde, tridecene aldehyde, hexahydrobenzaldehyde, adipic dialdehyde, formylacetonitrile, 4-[216161-trimethylcyclohexylidene - (11)] - 2 - methylbutene - (2) - al - (1), 4 - chlorophenyl acetaldehyde and 4-methoxyphenyl acetaldehyde. The process may also be used for the production of b ,g -unsaturated aldehydes from a ,b -unsaturated halogen compounds.
