Abstract

790,516. Mechanical garages. KIRKLAND, G. W., and GRIGGS, F. E. Aug. 14, 1956 [Oct. 4, 1955], No. 28205/55. Class 78 (4). A wheeled vehicle is towed in a mechanical garage by a trolley 1 (Fig. 1) formed with a surface which can be inserted under the leading or trailing wheels of the vehicle and on which the wheels are retained to provide the towing connection. As illustrated the trolley has a hump 4 which is pushed under the front wheels of a vehicle while the vehicle is held at rest until the wheels engage a stop 10. The hump 4 is divided in two by a central channel (Fig. 2] and is provided with guiding flanges 8. The trolley may rock about a central wheel 5 on to either of two rollers 6, 7 so that the slope of the portion 3 of the surface of the trolley is increased after the wheels of the vehicle have passed on to it. The trolley may be pulled into and out of a lift cage 13 (Fig. 4) by a telescoping hydraulic ram, by a lazy tongs linkage, or by the screw and nut 18, 17 illustrated which act through a lever 15 which is caused by abutments 22, 23 at the ends of its path of travel to turn about a pivot 16 on the nut 17 to increase the travel of the trolley 1. The floor of the garage adjacenb the lift is preferably formed with rollers 24 (Fig. 7) which facilitate the passage of the trolley 1 under the wheels of the vehicle. Rollers 28, 30 are turned about vertical shafts 29, 31 to chock the vehicle wheels under the control of limit switches or the like operated by the movement of the trolley 1. The rollers 28, 30 are caused to rise and fall during the motion of the trolley 1 so that they describe a path parallel to its surface. Each of several lifts 13 (Fig. 10) may serve a number of storage floors each provided with a platform 39 mounted by rollers 40 to run on rails 38 so that any of several compartments on each platform may be brought into register with any of the lift gates.
