Abstract
789,995. Automatic control systems for dynamo-electric machines. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. April 29, 1955 [May 27, 1954], No. 12403/55. Class 38 (4). In a system for automatically controlling voltage and/or frequency of a dynamo-electric machine, the energization of a field winding of the machine is controlled by a carbon pile regulator, one winding of which is energized in dependence on the voltage or frequency and another winding of which is energized through a rectifier in dependence on voltage in the field circuit. As shown, a shunt motor 1 supplied with D.C. through leads 4, 5 drives an alternator 2 supplying A.C. to leads 21, 22. Output voltage is automatically maintained at a desired value by connecting in series with alternator field winding 19 a carbon pile regulator 35, main winding 41 of which is energized through a rectifier 44 from output leads 21, 22. Output frequency is automatically maintained at a desired value by connecting in series with motor field winding 6 a carbon pile regulator 9, main winding 15 of which is energized from output leads 21, 22 through a rectifier 16 in series with a tuned circuit 25 resonant at a frequency slightly removed from that desired. To prevent hunting, each carbon pile regulator has an auxiliary winding (27, 48), energized through a rectifier (29, 50) by the voltage across the field winding which it controls, so that reverse voltage induced in the field winding upon sudden reduction of field excitation is effective to energize the auxiliary regulator winding which opposes the main winding to stabilize the regulator.
