Abstract

Stable dispersions of metal compounds in lubricating oil are prepared by forming a homogeneous mass of a lubricating oil, an oil-soluble surface-active agent, an oil-insoluble compound of an alkali metal (lithium, sodium, potassium, caesium or rubidium) or an alkaline earth metal (barium, magnesium, calcium or strontium), water in a proportion not less than 2.5 per cent by weight based on the amount of surface-active agent present, and an aliphatic alcohol containing less than 6 carbon atoms per molecule, precipitating from the mass an oil-insoluble inorganic compound of the metal in the form of a dispersion of particles the diameters of which are less than 1 micron, and removing the residual alcohol and water. The lubricating oil may be a hydrocarbon oil such as mineral oil or may consist wholly or in part of fatty oils such as corn oil, soybean oil or lard oil. Blended lubricating oils may contain voltalized oils or synthetic oils of lubricating viscosity. Suitable anionic surface-active agents are sulphonates, phenolic compounds, organic phosphorus compounds, phosphorus sulphide-treated olefins and metal soaps of carboxylic acids and many such compounds are specified. Suitable cationic and non-ionic surface-active agents are also listed. Oil-insoluble metal compounds which may be employed include oxides, hydroxides or alcoholates, but peroxides, carbonates, thiocarbonates, hydrides, nitrites, sulphides, borates, perborates, fluoborates, arsenites, fluosilicates, hypophosphites, formates, acetates, lactates, citrates, phenolates, benzoates, salicylates, a cetylsalicylates and naphtholates are also mentioned. The precipitation may be effected by evaporation of the alcohol or by chemical means, for example by passing carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide through the mass. The alcohol may be used in conjunction with another solvent, such as a hydrocarbon (particularly benzene, toluene or naphtha) or a higher alcohol (e.g. capryl alcohol, tridecyl alcohol or hexanol). The final dispersion may be blended with further lubricating oil to produce a lubricating composition, to which additional substances, such as anti-foaming agents, pour-point depressants and oiliness improvers, may be added. Numerous examples of the preparation of dispersions are given.
