Abstract
789,800. Gas turbine jet propulsion plant- MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Sept. 13, 1955 [Sept. 22, 1954], No. 27456/54. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] In a ducted fan gas turbine jet propulsion engine the turbine comprises a rotor 13 drivingly connected to the compressor rotor 14 and a second rotor 18 free to contra-rotate with respect to the rotor 13. The combustion gases are discharged directly on to the blades 18a of rotor 18, no fixed nozzle vanes being provided. Mounted on the tips of blades 18a is a support member 22 which carries a further row of turbine rotor blades 23 and also the rotor blades 24 of the ducted fan. The stator blades 28 of the fan may be shaped to accelerate the air stream from the ducted fan so that its velocity more nearly matches that of the stream of hot gases from the turbine. A number of engines may be mounted vertically in an aircraft nacelle provided with vanes which may be inclined forwardly to give a forward component to the jet streams, Fig. 8 (not shown). Specifications 587,528, 587,571 and 632,568 are referred to.
