Each of a plurality of wires together forming a single strand in the braiding of sleeves, such as high pressure hoses, is wound on its individual bobbin 5, all of which bobbins are rotatably mounted on a common spindle 4, and is separately tensioned. Each wire passes over a corresponding one of rollers 25 on a fixed bridge 8, under an individual roller 15a carried on a slidable tension adjuster 13, through a hole in the bridge 8, over an individual guide roller 17 (except for the central strand) through an eye 18, over a multiple roller 23 carried on a pivotable plate 21 and through an eye 24 to the braiding point. Each bobbin is at first held by engagement of a slidable pawl 7, under the action of a spring 10, with a ratchet wheel 6 fixed to the bobbin but, as each wire is consumed, its tension adjuster 13 is pulled up its guide tube 12, against the action of a spring 14, until a projection 15b on the adjuster abuts against a collar 7a on the pawl and lifts it out of engagement with its ratchet. The spindle 4 may be arranged vertically and the pawl and ratchet may be replaced by a suitable brake. If a wire breaks, its tension adjuster is pushed down by its spring until a lug 26 on it operates a stop motion.
