Abstract
An emulsifiable composition, for use as a mould release agent, consists essentially of from 0.5 to 30 per cent by weight of a cationic, anionic or non-ionic emulsifying agent and from 70 to 99.5 per cent by weight of a dimethylsilyl ester of a monomeric or polymeric ethylene or propylene glycol, the ester containing from 1 to 60 per cent by weight of dimethylsilyl units. A long list of emulsifying agents is given. The esters may be prepared: (1) by esterification of dimethylpolysiloxane with the glycol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and with provision for removal of water as it is formed; or (2) by transesterification of a dimethyl di-alkoxy silane with the glycol or (3) by reacting dimethyldihalosilane with one or more of the glycols. In examples: (1) 3 mols. of dimethyldiethoxy silane were reacted with 4 mols. of ethylene glycol until the theoretical amount of ethanol had been removed to give a clear liquid which, when mixed with the specified emulsifying agents, was dispersible in water; similar results were obtained with the reaction product of (2) 2 mols. of a polyethylene glycol (molecular weight 400) and 1 mol. of dimethyldiethoxysilane; and (3) 4 mols. of propylene glycol and 3 mols. of dimethyldiethoxy silane.
