Abstract
A hydrogenated off-colour polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene copolymer, the residual unsaturation of which have been reduced at least 50 per cent by hydrogenation in the presence of a nickel catalyst is contacted with a saturated organo mono- or poly-carboxylic acid of 2 to 8 carbon atoms or with a mineral acid. The nickel catalyst may be nickel-kieselguhr, and the styrene should amount to not over 30 per cent of the monomeric mixture. The amount of acid is preferably from 0.01 to 5 per cent and specified acids are acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, caproic, heptanoic, caprylic, oxalic, malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, pimelic, azelaic, sebasic, hydrochloric and phosphoric acids, which are used preferably in aqueous solution.
