Abstract

788,940. Electrostatic precipitation. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 25, 1954 [Dec. 1, 1953], No. 34171/54. Class 39(1). An electrostatic precipitator comprises a removable top wall 5, a bottom wall 12, a pair of oppositely disposed side walls, a pair 13, 14 of rails extending upwardly from the bottom wall, a collector cell 16 having flanged ends 15 resting on the rails 13, 14, the side walls each having a pair of guides 20, 21 extending substantially vertically on opposite sides of the flanged ends 15, an ionizer 23-30, and means including the rail 14 for supporting the ionizer. Flanged ends 17 of an upper collector cell 18 rest upon the flanged ends 15 of the collector cell 16. The collector cells 16 and 18 are similar to those described in Specification 651,301. The precipitator has an air inlet 9 and an air outlet 10 and the rails 13, 14 prevent the flow of air bypassing the bottom of the collector cell 16. The ionizer supporting means includes an upper end plate 23 has an upturned downstream portion 36 which engages an upstream portion 35 on each of the guides 21 and a lower plate 24 having a downturned downstream portion 32, engaging an upturned portion 33 on the rail 14. The ionizer has the insulators 25 attached to the plates 23 and 24 and between which extend metal rods 26 extending from which are arms 27 supporting the ionizer wires 28. The ionizer also has side plates 29 between which extend metal tubes 30 extending on opposite sides of the ionizer wires to form non-discharging electrodes. The plates 23 and 24 have semicylindrical portions 31 also forming non- discharging electrodes. The tie rod 38 connecting the plates of the upper cell 18 has attached thereto a contact spring 39 which touches the terminal 40 supported by an insulator 41 supported from one of the side walls of the casing. The terminal 40 is connected to the + ve terminal of a power pack 42 attached to this side wall. The metal casing 8 of the precipitator is grounded and connected to the -ve terminal of the power pack to which the collector cells are also thereby connected. A spring 45 is attached to a pair of the arms 27 and contacts the terminal 46 carried by an insulator 47. The terminal 46 is attached to a high voltage +ve terminal of the power pack 42. The removable top wall 5 of the casing 8 has a metal strip 50 attached thereto extending over the power pack 42 which contains a safety switch having an operating screw 51 extending through the strip 50. The top wall 5 has attached thereto a plate 56 in the form of a rectangular enclosure having a lower wall extending over and contacting the flanged ends of the upper cell 18, thus preventing air bypassing the top of the upper cell. A water header 60 between the air inlet 9 and the ionizer has nozzles for projecting spray upon the ionizer and collector electrodes. The floor 12 of the precipitator is inclined towards the inlet 9 and has a drain outlet 62.
