[Also in Group XXVIII] A coal hod or similar hollow body is made from resin-bonded plywood or a plastic or like material by providing at least two jig-positioned holes 3 in a sheet of the material and using the holes to locate the sheet for cutting blanks of the developed size to locate the blank for scarfing the edge portions 5 to be joined, to locate the blank on a mandrel round which it is wrapped so that the edges are brought into overlapping position for joining by adhesive and heat and pressure and finally for locating the hollow body 4 for trimming of the ends. The holes may be positioned for subsequent attachment of handles or may be located on parts of the material which are subsequently trimmed off. The tapered mandrel 13 is supported at one end in a fixed bearing 8 and at the other end has a pin 13c engaged by a shaft 18 rotated by a handle 18a or other means, the shaft 18 being journalled in an arm 15 which is pivoted at 16 so that, on withdrawal of the shaft 18, it can be moved to one side to allow the formed body to be withdrawn from the mandrel. Locking pins 15a and 15b secure the arm 15 in the working and withdrawn positions respectively. Internal heating means, such as a steam jacket constituted by the mandrel shaft 9, is provided on the mandrel and a pivoted clamping bar 27 provided with spring-loaded pins 32 for engaging the jig-positioned holes 3 is mounted to rotate with the mandrel. A beam structure 12 carried by shafts 11 and 16 above the mandrel supports an adjustable slipper bar 21 by means of bolts 23 and a resilient strip 21a and also has hydraulic, pneumatic or other jacks 25 which, when the scarfed edges 5 are brought into overlapping relation on the mandrel, are actuated to force a presser bar 20 against the join and bond it by heat and pressure. The lower part 20a of the presser bar may be of densified plywood and may incorporate low voltage or high frequency or other heating means.
