Abstract

579,212. Dart boards. BOTHNER, M. E. April 17, 1944, No. 7074. Convention date, April 28, 1943. [Class 132 (iii)] Relates to the manufacture of dart and like boards of the kind wherein a clamping member holds in a state of compression a bundle of fibrous members whose ends constitute the front and rear surfaces of the board. The fibrous bundles, which may be dried grass, are first pressed into cylindrical shape between dies 3, 4 until the ends of spaced semi-circular or polygonal clamping bands 5 touch, whereupon the latter are joined by welding through apertures along the joint. Alternatively, the welding may be done after removal from the press by slipping clamping-rings provided with handles over the ends of the dies. The bundle is then gripped by clamps 12 in the drum-like chuck member 11 of a parting-off machine, Fig. 3, the projecting end of the bundle being gripped by set-screws 14 in a shallow chuck member 13 driven at the same speed as the member 11. A parting-off tool 24, Fig. 5, is fed by a hand-wheel 28 and screwthreaded spindle in a direction at right angles to the turning axis of the bundle into successive spaces between the clamping bands. The tool 24 has two arms provided with rounded serrations 30 which have ground cutting edges. The scoring-areas of the board are defined by arranging strips of thin sheet metal in a jig and forming them edgewise into the face of the board. A wire suspension dye is threaded under the band 5, and the back of the board may be treated with a bituminous composition.
