Abstract
788,574. Cutting and compressing wood. KUNDSEN, N. B. Nov. 29, 1955, No. 34128/55. Class 145. Round rods are cut into dowel lengths by means of rotary spaced cutting discs 9 and the ends of the dowels are simultaneously compressed to a chamfered shape by conical discs 10 on each side of the cutting discs. The rods are fed into the discs by an adjustable guard 1 eccentric to the axis of the disc or, in a modification, are pressed by a spring-loaded piston into the gap between the discs and an adjustable roller driven at a lower speed than the cutting discs. The guard or roller has a chequered surface so that the rods rotate during cutting and so that the dowels are knurled on their peripheries and, to ensure rotation of the rods, shallow grooves are provided across the cutting edges of the discs. A finger 34 removes any dowels that may have jammed between the discs.
