Abstract

788,439. Moulding tubes. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. June 2, 1954, No. 16297/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXII] Tubes of polyethylene &c. are formed to rectangular, triangular, D-shape, pear shape &c. sections by drawing through a die comprising a sizing part b<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 10, of the required final section which is merged into by a conical frustum entry portion a<SP>1</SP>. The major diameter D of the cone frustum is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the stock and the minor diameter s equals the smallest cross dimension of the product, the merge being obtained by removing proud edges at the intersection so that at any position 13, 17 along the die, a face b, Figs. 13, 17, forms a tangent to the curve of the conical frustum from a point at a corner of the final section. In operation the tangents b progressively close with the equivalent of a toggle action to force the material towards the corners. The tubes may be pulled or pushed through the die as by hydraulic cylinders and in one example the tube is alternately pushed by a hydraulic cylinder 3a, Fig 3, while gripped by a cross-head 5 and then pulled by a hydraulic cylinder 4 while gripped by a cross-head 6. The movement of the cylinders is so arranged that the work is continuously moved. In another example the tube is drawn through the die by the dog carriage of a drawbench. The tube is gripped internally by four pegs 2, Fig. 6, which extend radially towards the four corners of the square section die and are forced outwards by a conical mandrel 1 on the dog carriage to dig into the internal surface of the tube. The pegs are carried in a sleeve 3 which is moved longitudinally over the mandrel by a handle 6 through a link 5 to engage or release the grip. Springs 9 retract the pegs 2 when released and a stop 8 on the mandrel 1 engaged by the sleeve 3 limits the engagement of the pegs 2 with the work. The die is built up from a number of segments 6 adjustable by shims 5 and located between a thrust plate 7 and a cover plate 8.
