Abstract
<PICT:0788154/III/1> In a process for the preparation of soot from acetylene or mixtures of acetylene and hydrocarbons by decomposition under pressure in the absence of oxygen in a vertical splitting tube provided with a spark plug and an outlet at the bottom, the soot is discharged from the splitting tube by the pressure of hydrogen formed and standing above the soot which has settled, without any additional rinsing. The acetylene may be mixed with ethylene, propylene, butane, butylene, or oil gas. Acetylene entering at 2 is passed by compressor 1 into storage tube 4 until a pressure of 15 atmospheres is obtained, automatically adjusted by blow-off valve 5. The gas is then passed into splitting tube 7 through inlet valve 6, when the equalized pressure between 4 and 1 is 10 atmospheres, and decomposed by sparking plug 8. The reaction products are allowed to cool and settle for 48 seconds and are then discharged through outlet valve 9, which is suddenly opened, and cooler 24 to soot collector 21. Control cylinder 10, driven by a synchronous motor, energizes electromagnets 15, 17 and spark plug 8 for the necessary times, while it rotates once per minute, and times for the various steps are quoted for a 1 minute cycle. Electromagnets 15, 17 opening compressed-air valves 13, 18 control opening and closing of inlet and outlet valves 6, 9. The soot may be discharged through sack-filling shoot 22 in the bottom of the soot collector 21, while the hydrogen passes out through filter 23. The splitting tube should be polished inside, and should have a hard metal, e.g. chromium, coating before polishing. The bulk density of the soot is varied, e.g. 20-100 gms/l., by altering the size of opening in the outlet valve, or by installing baffles or nozzles in the discharge pipe.
