Abstract

787,832. Ammunition projectiles and land mines. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. Nov. 19, 1956 [Jan. 11, 1956], No. 35284/56. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) The casing for a mine or projectile is formed in a two-part mould 1, 2 from an explosive reinforced with a fabric layer 7, e.g. glass wool. The upper half 1 of the mould has an opening 3 in which is inserted a sleeve 4 for holding the ignition mechanism, so that the sleeve is cast in the casing, and filling plugs 5, 6 are screwed into the mould. The mould is lined with the layer 7, which is of material undetectable by mine detectors, and explosive, which can be cast, is then poured in through the plug hole 6 or opening 3. When sufficient explosive has solidified to give a casing of the required thickness, the surplus explosive is poured out, the process may be repeated and with a different explosive to produce a casing having an outer reinforced layer and inner layers as required. The casing is then removed and filled. T.N.T. , tritonal, torpex and cyclotol may be used to form the casing. The projectile mould, Fig. 4, has openings 3<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> at top and bottom to receive sleeves 4<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP> embedded in the explosive during the casting and intended to house the ignition mechanism. The layer 7<SP>1</SP> may be of glass wool or metal. Through sleeve 4<SP>1</SP> is inserted a tube 9 having one or more openings at the bottom and rotatably connected to a container (not shown) of molten explosive. Explosive passing through the rotating tube flows through the openings and is thrown by centrifugal force against the lay 7<SP>1</SP>. The tube is slowly raised as the coating is formed. The process may be repeated with the same or a different explosive and the mould may also be rotated to distribute explosive on the layer 7<SP>1</SP>.
