Apparatus for testing filled containers comprises a container-supporting platform 8 supported by links 6 which are pivoted to four bell-crank levers 3, 5 fulcrummed in brackets 2 carried by a pair of spaced L-shaped frame members 1. The vertical arms 3 of the levers are coupled together by a pair of links 4 and one arm is also coupled by a connecting rod 9 to a variable throw crank assembly 18-24 carried by a transverse shaft which is driven through a belt and pulley 15 by a variable-speed electric motor 16. The platform 8 is also coupled by a connecting rod 10 to a similar crank assembly carried by a second transverse shaft which is driven from the first shaft by reduction gearing 11, 12. A cradle 26 is adjustable vertically on the frame members 1 by manual rotation of a shaft 27 carrying pinions 28 meshing with racks and may be locked in any desired position by clamps 31. A loading platen 42 is suspended by links 39 from a transverse shaft 40 passing through arms 37 pivoted to the cradle and has an extension 44. supporting weights 46. The platen is centralized by springs 45 and the extension 44 is formed with a clearance slot 45 for the shaft 40. The apparatus is intended to simulate the loads to which a filled container is subjected during transport by road or rail in a stack. The container is placed on the platform 8 and the cradle 26 is lowered until the platen 42 rests on the top of the container. The weights 46 may be adjusted to simulate conditions in stacks of various heights, and by adjustment of the cranks and variation of the speed of the motor the container may be subjected to vertical and/ or horizontal oscillations of any desired amplitude and frequency. The two crank assemblies may be driven by separate motors.
