Abstract
787,494. Laminated materials. BAKELITE, Ltd. Feb. 21, 1956, No. 5354/56. Class 140. A method for making a laminated product comprising sheets of fibrous material impregnated with a synthetic resin and by an inner layer or layers one or more metal sheets or foils comprises building up the stack of the constituent sheets prior to consolidating it with heat and pressure so that upon each side of the metal component or each of the metal components there is a layer of adhesive for the metal next thereto and a layer comprising a melamineformaldehyde or melamine/urea-formaldehyde resin between the adhesive for the metal and the adjacent fibrous sheet material. Sheets or foils of aluminium or copper may be used. As adhesive for the metal there may be used a polyvinyl butyral resin in conjunction, if desired, with a phenol formaldehyde resin. The adhesive for the metal may be applied to the metal or to a fibrous sheet impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin or it may be interposed as an unsupported film. The fibrous sheets may consist of paper or woven or felted sheets of cotton, nylon or glass fibres. The synthetic bonding resin for the fibrous material may comprise phenol formaldehyde resins, melamine formaldehyde resins or urea-formaldehyde resins. The melamine formaldehyde layer may be formed by applying it in the form of a solution to metal which has been coated with adhesive; or it may be coated on to an unsupported film of adhesive for the metal, or carried on a fibrous sheet impregnated therewith. Examples disclose the formation of laminated products by assembling the layers and then compressing them at elevated temperatures.
