Abstract
787,439. Regulating. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Aug. 8, 1955 [Aug. 14, 1954], No. 22751/55. Class 7(6) [Also in Group XXVIII] In a power plant subject to sudden increases in load and having an engine 1 driving a generator 3 supplying electric current or a stream of gas or liquid under pressure to a place of consumption, the regulator member 17 of the engine fuel injection pump is controlled by a speed governor 6 the action of which is supplemented by an adjusting device 32 which operates to cause an immediate increase in fuel supply when the load suddenly increases. As applied to a welding machine the generator 3 feeds a transformer 23 supplying the welding apparatus 24 controlled by a control apparatus 38 and the adjusting device 32 comprises a piston 31 connected to the governor linkage 15 and actuated by compressed air supplied past a valve 34 operated by a solenoid 36 the energization of which is controlled from the control apparatus 38. Immediately the welding starts, causing a sudden increase in load on the engine, the valve 34 is opened and compressed air forces the piston 31 down against a stop 39 so that the fuel pump control lever 17 is immediately moved to the approximate position required by the increased load, thereby avoiding a large drop in engine speed. The solenoid 36 may be energized slightly in advance of the increase in load to compensate for any time lag in the adjusting device 32. In power plants having compressed or compressed liquid generators, compressed air or liquid may be transmitted from the place of consumption to provide the impulse for actuating the adjusting device 32.
