787,336. Producing photographic emulsions continuously. KRIVANEK, L. Oct. 29, 1954, No. 31342/54. Class 98(2) Photographic silver halide emulsions are produced continuously by feeding the starting materials into a series of lightproof interconnected vessels or into a single .light-proof tubular vessel divided into sections, the vessels or vessel having zones for the reaction, maturation, washing, after-maturation and finishing processes, and stirring the material as it .passes continuously through the various zones. 'As shown, pairs of tanks 1, 2 and 3, 4 are provided respectively with aqueous gelatin solutions of alkali metal halide and silver nitrate, and the solutions are fed from tanks 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 by 'pumps 5 or 6 to the mixing vessel 7 which is provided with a stirrer 9 and heating jacket 8. The mixture is then passed to a physical maturation zone 10, also provided with a heating jacket 11 and stirrer 12. After the required maturing time it passes to a zone 13 having a stirrer 15, where it is washed by dialysis by passing water through jacket 14 which is divided into compartments of over and under pressure and has a semi-permeable inner wall. In the after-maturation zone 16, the emulsion is again heated by jacket 17 and supplied with photochemically active additives from a tank 19 while being stirred by stirrer 18. In the finishing zone 21, the emulsion is stirred by stirrer 22 while additives such, as stabilizers, hardeners and sensitizers are added at 23. The finished emulsion is passed through a filter 24 to the coating apparatus.
