Abstract

787,195. Roller mills. SOC. DE, TECHNIQUE INDUSTRIELLE. March 23, 1955 [June 14, 1954], No. 8496/55. Class 59 [Also in Group XII] In preparing coal or coal mixtures containing powdered coke or coals of different qualities prior to its introduction into a coke oven particulate coal or coal mixture is compressed by passing it between a pair of rolls having peripheral grooves arranged parallel with the roll axes. The grooves of the rolls are shown in profile in Figs. 1-3; the arrangements of the rolls being such that while there is no intermeshing in Figs. 1 and 2, the rolls in Fig. 3 intermesh in the manner of. gear teeth. One or both of the rolls may be driven and the degree of compression achieved may be varied by varying the rate of feed of uncompressed material to the rolls or by varying the separation between the rolls. The above rolls are preferably associated with a device for breaking down the compressed coal or coal mixture into a mixture containing appropriate proportions of coarse, medium and fine particle sizes - to obtain maximum density in the resultant mixture. Such a device may comprise a pair of rolls having peripheral grooves of a variety of widths in planes perpendicular to the roll axes so that the compressed coal is cut into strips of a variety of widths. As shown in Fig. 6 the rolls are mounted at the base of the hopper 7 of the coal charging car of a coke oven battery, the rolls 8 compressing the coal from the hopper 7 and the rolls 9 breaking down the coal into particles of a desired size. The rolls 8 and 9 are rotated at high peripheral speed so that coal from the hopper 7 is eventually discharged downwardly at considerable speed into the coke oven 10.
