Abstract

786,940. Turbine and compressor blades. AMERICAN METAL PRODUCTS CO. Feb. 28, 1956 [March 3, 1955], No. 6231/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXII] A method of shaping a hollow blade to a desired form is characterized in that the blade interior is filled with water and frozen to form ice prior to final shaping of the blade. The blade comprises a cast body 11 of transverse arcuate shape which terminates in end walls 12, 13 from which extend trunnions 14, 15, each having a washer-like shoulder 16, and is formed with a longitudinal rib 17 extending from the wall 13 almost to the wall 12, being spaced therefrom to form an aperture 18. A formed arcuate sheet 19, with its forward end 21 reversely bent to engage a shouldered edge portion of the body 11, is brazed to the edges, end walls and rib 17 of the body 11. A U-shaped passage thus formed in the blade communicates with the atmosphere through an aperture 24 in the trunnion 15 and an aperture 26 in the sheet 19. The blade is then filled with water, the aperture 26 closed by adhesive tape, the aperture 24 plugged, and then frozen to form ice. The adhesive tape is then removed from aperture 26 and the blade placed in the cavity of a die set. The die elements are moved together to shape the blade, the ice preventing its collapse but melting at the pressure points. The blade is then removed from the die set, the aperture 24 unplugged and the ice allowed to melt and flow from the blade.
