Abstract

786,921. Finishing fabrics. FORSTER, K. Oct. 25, 1955 [Oct. 26, 1954], No. 30422/55. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group IX] A hooked pile fabric is formed by weaving into a foundation fabric pile - forming synthetic fibres which extend from the foundation fabric in an upright direction and are of substantially equal length, and subjecting the fibres to axial pressure accompanied by heating to effect bending of the tips and plastic deformation thereof to hook shape. As shown, the pile fabric 1, Fig. 1, is drawn over a slide 3 beneath a roll 4 driven at a peripheral speed equal to the fabric speed. The surface of roll 4 is honeycombed with hemispherical concavities. The roll is adjusted so that the tips of the pile threads 11, Fig. 2, strike against the concavities and are bent to form hooks in random directions. Roll 4 is heated so as to soften the pile tips, the lower part of the pile and the foundation fabric being cooled by air drawn through slots 7 in slide 3 and through the fabric. Slots 7 are enlarged towards the exit side of the appartus so that the hooks 13 are cooled and set. The pile fibres may be of nylon or perlon; they may be welded or cemented at the base to the foundation fabric by thermal or chemical treatment applied to the foundation fabric from the reverse side prior to or after formation of the hooks.
