Abstract

786,608. Making composite sheets for heat exchangers; stamping; jointing by rolling. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1956 [Feb. 25, 1955], No. 3178/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making a composite sheet for a heat exchanger comprises roll bonding a pair of superimposed metal sheets 10 and 12 between which are a first pattern 14 of stop-weld material, adapted on subsequent dilation to form a system of passages, and a second separate pattern 18 of stop-weld material, situated between the first pattern and an edge of the superimposed sheets; dilating the second pattern on the composite sheet thus formed to form bulged portions corresponding to the position of specific zones of said first pattern; and marking the composite sheet to locate said zones. The stopweld material, e.g. a mixture of graphite and water glass, is applied to the lower sheet 12 and the second pattern 18 has projections 20 located immediately opposite the midpoints of the unstopped areas 16. The sheets 10 and 12 are then assembled and passed between heated rolls to form the composite sheet 21. In order to locate accurately the zones between the welded areas 16 the transverse edge of the composite sheet is prised open at one of the two positions at which the pattern 18 meets that edge and high pressure fluid is introduced to dilate the second pattern to form passages 18a and short locating side channels 20a which by drawing a line 22 between the channels locate the mid zones of the welded areas. Finally, the passages 18a and side channels 20a are cut from the composite sheet and the sheet is bent to serpentine shape, Fig. 5, so that each curved portion includes the zones between the welded areas 16 and the pattern 14 is dilated on a die 26 to form a refrigerator evaporator.
