Abstract

786,370. Cable stranding apparatus. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Dec. 2, 1955 [Dec. 6, 1954], No. 34539/55. Class 109 Cable stranding appartus comprises a forming die for wires advanced longitudinally through the die and twisted helically after leaving the die, a guide having circular arrangements of apertures for the wires mounted for rocking movement in advance of the die, means for rocking the guide, and a stationary element interposed between the forming die and the guide and having an aperture so contoured that the positions of the wires relative to each other will vary during the rocking motion of the guide. As shown, a frame 10 has five forming dies 11 through which groups 12 of wires are advanced. A plate 15 having transposing elements 16 is supported by rods 14 attached to the frame 10 between the dies 11 and the guides 19. The guides 19 have apertures 21, 22 and are rocked through approximately 320 degrees by teeth 29 engaging a chain 36 driven by a reversible motor 31, the motor being caused to reverse by switches 38, 39 tripped by pegs 40, 41 on two of the guides 19. The kidney-shaped apertures 53 of the elements 16, together with the rocking of the guides 19 cause the outermost wires to move inwards and vice-versa, thus constantly changing the helices of the wires.
