Abstract

786,263. Signs. COMPRA PLASTICS, Ltd., and STURM, R. H. April 29, 1954 [April 30. 1953], No. 11962/53. Class 3(2) [Also in Group XL(a)] A sign. which is directionally reflecting and can exhibit daylight fluorescence, comprises a support 1, a reflecting coating 2, a coating 3 including a luminescent material, and a layer of small approximately spherical particles 4 of ultra-violet absorbent material, e.g. glass, closely covering and adhering to the luminescent material coating whereby the particles 4 serve as an ultra-violet filter to light incident on the luminescent material. The support 1 can be composed of a thermoplastic material such as polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl copolymers, acrylic polymers or copolymers, or of a porous material such as paper, cardboard, wood, felt. leather or a textile material coated or impregnated with the thermoplastic material. The reflecting coating 2 can be of the type described in Specification 669,738 [Group IV(a)] or Specification 774,891 [Group IV(a)] by pigmenting the coating media described therein with white materials such as magnesium carbonate, titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. The coating is applied in liquid form, and then dried or polymerized. The luminescent coating 3 is formed of the same type of material as the reflecting coating with luminescent materials examples of which are given. The luminescent materials may be chosen to have a luminescent colour approximately to the visual colour of the coating. The layer of glass particles 4 is preferably one particle thick, packed closely and applied before the luminescent coating has dried or polymerized. The glass particles can be made from glass containing 2.0 to 3.5 per cent lead oxide and of a diameter of 0.40 mms. The glass particles can be coloured with other metallic oxides such as chromium, copper and uranium oxide. The luminescent coating 3 is covered with a transparent layer 5 of composition of the type described in Specifications 669,738 and 774,891 which seals the coating 3 against moisture. Specifications 672,762 and 672,763 [both in Group XL(a)] also are referred to.
